Interviews and documentary: find the quote from the words

A documentary can sit on dozens of hours of interviews, and a good share of the editor's day goes to remembering where the subject said that one line. Rescanzo searches both speech and picture, so the sound bite and the B-roll that covers it come out of the same app.

Speech search instead of waiting for transcripts

The usual route is to send interviews off for transcription, wait for the text and search that. In Pro mode Rescanzo listens to the audio itself: type the words you remember, for example "that was the first time I left home", and you get the spot where they were said.

Pro costs 2 tokens a search plus 1 for every started minute of video the cloud checks. Finding a line in one short interview is cheap; for a big archive, work out a budget first.

B-roll by description

To cover a sound bite you need shots of the subject not talking: "hands close-up", "walking down the street away from camera", "looking out of the window", "old photos on the table". Queries like these run in Low and Mid on your computer and cost 1 and 2 tokens.

Several takes of the same answer

Subjects often say the same thing twice, and the second version is frequently shorter and cleaner. Speech search lists every place it found, so you can compare them back to back instead of hunting each take down on the timeline.

Your subjects' recordings

Interviews can be very personal, and some subjects are promised anonymity. In Low and Mid the footage stays on your computer. In Pro only short fragments of what was found go to the cloud to be checked, and they aren't stored; if a subject was told the recording would never leave the room, work without Pro.

Chosen bites and B-roll go to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro as a ready timeline with source timecodes; for VEGAS Pro, Rescanzo saves an EDL.

Questions and answers

Which languages does speech search support?

Russian and English. If the subject speaks another language, you can only find moments by describing the shot.

Do I need a transcript to search speech?

No, in Pro mode Rescanzo listens to the audio itself. You may still want a transcript for subtitles or a paper edit.
